Rice husks

Rice production naturally produces rice husks, the waste product of the hulling mills. Rice husks mainly consist of the husk of the rice grain. Depending on the type of rice and production technique, approximately 20-25% of the total rice production consists of rice husks. It is available worldwide in very large quantities. Suriname, a very small rice producer in the world, produces 75,000 tons of rice husks annually. Brazil, which is not even one of the large producers, produces around 2.4 million tons. Worldwide, approximately 180 million tons of rice husks are produced, of which only a fraction is used. We can supply rice husks all year round.

Applications

Rice hulls have a wide range of applications.

  • Unprocessed it can be used very well as litter in stables. Because rice husks absorb a lot of moisture it can be used longer and needs to be refreshed less often. Of course this saves a lot on costs.
  • By grinding rice husks and making them into pellets, they can be used in the biomass industry and in pellet stoves.
  • When rice husks are heated in a controlled manner, they can be used as a natural soil improver.
  • By using pyrolysis it is possible to extract silicon from rice husks, among other things, which offers many possibilities in the technology sector.
